March 2017: A Note from the New Director
Welcome to the Island People’s Project Morning Program! For six weeks each summer, the Island People’s Project offers children 4-11 years old mornings filled with friends, fun and Fishers Island lore. Children are grouped by age for physical games and activities; arts, crafts, and science projects; as well as dance and movement, including a musical production staged in late July. Each week includes at least one local excursion to locations such as the Fishers Island Museum or Oyster Farm OR a special event such as Mini-Olympics or Pet Show.
The Morning Program offers an enriching array of activities and information to children centered around the Fishers Island community and building an awareness of our Island resources. It offers an opportunity for resident and summer families to build relationships, share their experiences, and compare their perspectives on island life. Together we learn about the history of Fishers Island and the conservation needed to maintain our natural island ecosystems in balance with meeting the needs of their human neighbors. A calendar of weekly themes and special events will be posted in June. Volunteers from the community are always welcome to present an activity or program as well.
The Morning Program runs weekdays July 2 - August 11, 9:00am-12:00 noon at the Fishers Island School. Children are supervised at all times by CPR/First Aid certified counselors, many of whom have been part of the Morning Program in previous years as counselors or participants.
Feel free to reach out to me or the IPP Board if you have any questions or concerns about the Morning Program.
Counselor applications are no longer being accepted for 2017. Applicants will be notified by April 1, 2017 whether or not they are being offered a position and for which weeks.
Bonnie has been coming to Fishers Island for more than 25 years with her husband, Andrew, who grew up spending summers here. Their three children attended the Morning Program in their early years, and in more recent years have worked as counselors. Bonnie comes to us with experience teaching children in preschool all the way through high school. She served as a Trustee for the Fishers Island Library for six years, and she currently works as a high school Library Media Specialist in New Jersey. Bonnie is delighted to join the IPP Morning Program for it's 50th year nurturing connections between the children, community, and ecology of Fishers Island.
